The music artist has recently faced accusations of subtly referencing Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber’s ex, in a promotional video for her latest song. Now, she has addressed speculations that her song’s lyrics are about another former celebrity relationship. Here’s her response.
Taking to her Instagram, the artist clarified the genuine message behind her new song, even though some fans had jumped to their own conclusions.
In a social media post, Selena Gomez expressed her gratitude to her fans for their support of her recent single while unveiling the true inspiration behind her latest work in the caption. She wrote:
“Thank you all for the overwhelming love for ‘Single Soon’!!! It’s a playful anthem celebrating self-confidence and enjoying one’s own company… and it’s also incredibly fun to dance to!”
Fans had eagerly awaited the Disney alum’s return to the music scene after a lengthy hiatus, but they may have read too much into the lyrics.
Hollywood Life’s Instagram account posted a photo of Selena Gomez and her ex at the Met Gala, accompanied by the caption:
“In case you missed it, #SelenaGomez released her latest song, ‘Single Soon,’ earlier this week! Some of her fans speculate that it is about her past relationship with #TheWeeknd. What’s your take?”
To the surprise of fans, the 31-year-old star herself responded to the post, refuting the claims with the comment: “Absolutely untrue.”
Speculation had arisen due to lyrics in the track that include the lines: “Maybe I’ll just disappear, I don’t wanna see a tear, And the weekend’s almost here.”
However, it is now clear that this chapter is closed.
Exploring the Couple’s Relationship Although their relationship was relatively brief, lasting only 10 months, the two musical icons caused a sensation when they made a joint appearance at the Met Gala in 2017.
Their first couple selfie emerged a month before this high-profile event when they were spotted cozying up together at Coachella.
In September, it was even reported by PEOPLE that the singer of “Blinding Lights” had arranged his tour schedule around Selena’s kidney transplant surgery.
However, sadly, their love story wasn’t meant to last, as they went their separate ways in October of the same year, though they later confirmed in November that they had parted ways amicably as best friends.
